Blossom Watch from the National Trust on Edgbaston Street and at Cathedral Square

The National Trust has installed benches with blossom trees on Edgbaston Street (near the Bullring Rag and Indoor Market's) and in Cathedral Square. Installed in late March 2022, they are expected to be there for at least 6 weeks. But at the beginning of April 2022, the blossom seems to have finished flowering already. Was a mural but couldn't find it in Cathedral Square.

A series of pink benches with flower plants and new blossom trees on  Edgbaston Street. Where some of the outdoor market traders sometimes set up outside of the Rag Market.

The blossom trees have been here for a few weeks, and there wasn't much blossom left on them.

This view below from the bridge on Smallbrook Queensway, looking down Edgbaston Street towards the Rag Market.

Cathedral Square

In Cathedral Square, there is two paths of benches with the pink benches and flower planters with blossom trees.

dndimg alt="Blossom Watch" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/BW NT Cath Sq 01042022 (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The first path starts from one of the Temple Row entrances (opposite Temple Street) and leads towards Birmingham Cathedral.

dndimg alt="Blossom Watch" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/BW NT Cath Sq 01042022 (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The second path of pink benches and blossom trees goes from Birmingham Cathedral towards Colmore Row and Snow Hill Station Square. Daffodil cross and Grand Hotel Birmingham on the left. Even here, the blossom seems to have finished.

dndimg alt="Blossom Watch" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/BW NT Cath Sq 01042022 (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Catch me while you can #BlossomWatch

Have a look out for buses in Birmingham with the National Trust advert 'Catch me while you can #BlossomWatch'.

The no 24 National Express West Midlands bus, 4903 Lina, seen at Holloway Head, about to head around Holloway Circus and onto Smallbrook Queensway.

dndimg alt="Blossom Watch" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Blossom Watch NXWM Holloway CH 02042022.jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

If you want to see more blossom, I recommend you head to the suburbs, and check out the roads around the Outer Ring Road, A4040. A mixture of mature and young trees.

Be Bold Be Birmingham

At the time of this post being published, there will be around 6 months to go until the start of the Commonwealth Games, around Birmingham and the West Midlands!

Alexander Stadium, Perry Barr

The Alexander Stadium in Perry Park, at the beginning of January 2022. Seen near the Walsall Road. The hashtag is #BeBoldBeBham

Victoria Square, Birmingham

Seen at the end of December 2021, the Be Bold Be Birmingham hoardings around where the Floozie in the Jacuzzi used to be (currently having the fountain repaired).

dndimg alt="Be Bold Be Birmingham" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Be Bold Be Brum Floozie Vic Sq 28122021 (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

dndimg alt="Be Bold Be Birmingham" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Be Bold Be Brum Floozie Vic Sq 28122021 (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Seen outside of the Council House during early January 2022. Normally this would be the main entrance, but it's closed while the building (and Museum & Art Gallery) get repaired (BM & AG should reopen ETA April 2022).

dndimg alt="Be Bold Be Birmingham" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/BBBB Council House VS 09012022.JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The Council House was like this with Be Bold Be Birmingham at the end of September 2021.

BM & AG and the Council House at the end of January 2022 after (or during) a jet wash (with 103 Colmore Row). They have reapplied the Be Bold Be Birmingham slogan around the black hoardings (I think they moved or changed the hoardings).

Stratford Road - Birmingham / Solihull border

Seen on the Stratford Road, leaving Birmingham (Hall Green) for Solihull (Shirley) near Tesco. If you are driving into the City up the A34, you will see "Welcome to Birmingham Proud Host City of the Commonwealth Games 2022". If you are leaving the City and entering Solihull (on your way to the M42) you will see "Thanks for Visiting Birmingham". Seen on a walk down the Stratford Road to Shirley in November 2021.

dndimg alt="Be Bold Be Birmingham" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Be Bold Hall Green (Nov 2021) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

High Street, Harborne

I first spotted the Be Bold Be Birmingham signs in the summer of 2021. Such as on this council board on the High Street in Harborne, during August 2021. The same "Welcome to Birmingham Proud Host City of the Commonwealth Games 2022". It also comes up on digital billboards around the city.

The Queen's Baton Relay - mural by Gent 48

This mural painted by Birmingham street artist legend Gent 48, is at the corner of Hill Street and Navigation Street in Birmingham City Centre near Birmingham New Street Station. It was painted and unveiled in the middle of January 2022. The Queen's Baton Relay is going around the Commonwealth.

dndimg alt="Queens Baton Relay" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/B2022 Queens Baton BNSS 18012022 (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

dndimg alt="Queens Baton Relay" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/B2022 Queens Baton BNSS 18012022 (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

dndimg alt="Queens Baton Relay" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/B2022 Queens Baton BNSS 18012022 (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

dndimg alt="Queens Baton Relay" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/B2022 Queens Baton BNSS 18012022 (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Another view of Gent 48's Queen's Baton Relay mural from a car park on Swallow Street, looking down Hill Street to Navigation Street and Birmingham New Street Station. Late January 2022.

UB40 launched Musical Routes at Hall Green Station back in November 2021

(Late News). Near the end of November 2021, surviving members of UB40 were at Hall Green Station to unveil the first Musical Routes sign. The project is the brainchild of the Birmingham Music Archive founded by Jez Collins. While Birmingham We Are's Elliott Brown was at work that day, on the following Saturday morning, he got a few photos of the sign, with the thawing snow.

Saturday 27th November 2021

After hearing about this in the local news, the day after UB40 was at Hall Green Station, I walked here, before heading to catch the no 6 bus on the Stratford Road to the City Centre.

View from the footbridge of Hall Green Station. I normally get on from Welby Road (there is a path from Brooklands Road).

dndimg alt="Hall Green Station" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Musical Routes HGS (Nov 2021) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

In the station car park is the new Musical Routes sign below the new West Midlands Railway sign for Hall Green Station.

dndimg alt="Hall Green Station" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Musical Routes HGS (Nov 2021) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The map of Hall Green features Moseley & Kings Heath, Sparkbrook, Springfield (Sparkhill) and Hall Green. The map shows locations where famous Brummie musicians first started out, such as Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, UB40, Ocean Colour Scene, Bev Bevan and Laura Mvula.

dndimg alt="Hall Green Station" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Musical Routes HGS (Nov 2021) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Overnight had been some late November 2021 snow, but by the time I went out, it was thawing. The Musical Routes sign is near the disabled car parking spots.

dndimg alt="Hall Green Station" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Musical Routes HGS (Nov 2021) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Heading out of the Hall Green Station car park towards the Stratford Road, to catch a no 6 bus. It's been a while since I last caught a train from this station (due to cancellations as a result of a shortage ot train drivers and other reasons).

dndimg alt="Hall Green Station" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Musical Routes HGS (Nov 2021) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

National Express West Midlands is just a bit more reliable now than West Midlands Railway.

There will be other Musical Routes signs at other railway stations around Birmingham, but as yet, have not seen any more (or had time to visit any of them, other than my University and Perry Barr station rebuild updates).

Some more rainbow crossings

It's not just in Birmingham's Southside that you will find rainbow crossings. All around the UK. Such as in Taunton in Somerset. As well as closer to home in Solihull, and in Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. Happy New Year 2022. Not done many posts recently as they don't seem to get published by Jonathan as fast as Daniel's get's up, and nothing much to post.

Taunton, Somerset

Near the end of the first South West holiday at the end of August 2021 (Devon and Somerset). On Saturday 28th August 2021 in Taunton, Somerset, heading to the Museum of Somerset, we entered Goodland Gardens (near The Bridge and River Tone). Saw this rainbow path. No cycling is allowed down this path. Stopped for coffee nearby at The Shed.

Solihull, West Midlands

On Sunday 19th December 2021, heading to Cineworld at Touchwood in Solihull, to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home. A little early, so took a side path to the rear entrance near Manor Square. Found this rainbow path between Touchwood and the Solihull Council House. I don't think there had been a crossing at this point before.

dndimg alt="Rainbow path Solihull" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rainbow crossing Sol CH 19122021.jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

It had been a few months since I last got a train, so on Thursday 30th December 2021, I bought off peak return tickets in the Chiltern Railways app, and travelled down to Leamington Spa again, on the Chiltern Mainline, for a bit of walk around the Town Centre, and to have a coffee at Caffe Nero. On The Parade I spotted a rainbow crossing between Jephson Gardens and Pump Room Gardens. It was raining on and off, and took these from Pump Room Gardens later on the walk back to the station.
