Introducing Birmingham Hippodrome - Creativity with Community

The Hippodrome is one of the city's main entertainment venues.  During a challenging time for all venues, we look back and we look at what the future holds for The Hippodrome.

The Birmingham Hippodrome is, without question, one of the City's Gems.

In this feature, jointly managed with our community, we invite people to share their experiences of Birmingham Hippodrome.  We look at how The Hippodrome is tackling the challenges it faces and we look forward to what the future holds for this wonderful venue.

As well as being the home of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Hippodrome hosts a wide variety of other performances from visiting opera and ballet companies to touring West end shows, pantomime and drama.

The Birmingham Hippodrome, under the ownership of entrepreneur and impresario Thomas Barrasford, opened in October 1903, with the venue having operated prior to that as the city's Assembly Rooms and a variety theatre called the "Tivoli".  It was sold to Birmingham City Council in the 70's and since 1979 has operated under the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust, a registered charity.

Proposals have neen submitted which, if approved, will see a major overhaul of the famous theatre including a new frontage, upgraded foyer and new public spaces.

With the social distancing challenges all venues are facing, the Birmingham Hippodrome has looked at innovative ways of keeping people entertained, which includes a digital showcase of the work and history of the Dutch post-impressionist painter, Vincent Willem van Gogh.
